Disney and contemporary art examined in new MMFA exhibition
07-02-26
Montreal – If you’re in Montreal this spring you might want to take in a rather interesting exhibition entitled Once upon a Time Walt Disney. It is on view at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from March 8 to June 24, 2007 and features the eclectic sources that inspired the world of Disney. The contribution of Salvador Dali to Disney’s film Destino and Disney’s influence on contemporary art will also be demonstrated.
The exhibition will feature some 300 pieces bringing together artwork in the classical sense (paintings, sculptures, photographs, etc.) with a wide selection of original works by Disney Studio artists including large panoramic sets painted in gouache and models of characters and architecture. The presentation of the Disney Studio creations alongside artworks from the Middle Ages to Surrealism testifies to links not only to paintings and illustrations but also to literature, architecture, landscape painting, film and music, the presence and importance of which culminated in Fantasia.
