Calgary (10BP) – There were Valentine’s smiles at Galvins, February 6, when their small session of Canadian paintings turned in some excellent results on some big paintings. Taking the sale’s honours was a bid of $5720 for Summer, a 57” x 81” oil by Doug Morton. A Walter Drohan oil of the Alberta Foothills, 50” x 56” was another strong performer at $4070, while a bid of $3740 was enough to secure Ron Moppet’s Night Studio: Dawn/Plane (Prairie) a 64” x 96” oil on canvas.
Finding a buyer at $2530 was Illingworth Kerr’s Aspen Groves Evening Light, 12” x 16”. A similar sized work of Watchman Zion National Park, Utah picked up a bid of $1980. David Pugh’s Grain Elevators, 30” x 44” found a buyer at $1210, the same price realized for a Joe Acs oil, 48” x 61” of April Winds and for Tom Forrestall’s watercolour, 19” x 29” of The Beach at Annapolis.
William Perehudoff’s untitled watercolour, 22” x 30” fetched $1870, while a Jack Rigaux canvas of Elbow Falls in Summer, 1981, 30” x 79.5” sold for $1650. Neil Patterson’s Fall Colours, 24” x 26” fetched $2640, and a painting on birch bark by Norval Morrisseau found a buyer at $2860.
Also of note was a bid of $3025 for Country Road, 48” x 54” by John McKee, and the $1760 paid for Ted Godwin’s 34” x 38” watercolour of Old Beaver Dam, Belanger Creek.
