The Collector's Dictionary
of Canadian Artists at Auction is one of the most important reference
sources on Canadian artists yet published, and the first ever dictionary
of active Canadian secondary market artists. The four volume work has
taken more than three years to produce, and includes comprehensive biographical
listings on over 3000 Canadian artists and historical artists active
in Canada during their career, from the 1700s to the present. In addition,
there are more than 800 cross-references, an extensive bibliography,
and an important abbreviations database of prominent fine art societies
and institutions, both historical and contemporary. Volume one (A-F)
was published in 1999, volume two (G-L) in 2000, volume three (M-R)
in 2001, and volume four (S-Z) in 2003. The Dictionary, which provides
pertinent market information on both prominent and lesser known artists,
is the first comprehensive biographical reference source on secondary
market artists to be published in Canada.
Working in every medium from oil and watercolour to limited
edition prints and sculpture, the artists listed in the dictionary have
all had their work sell at auction at some time over the past 25 years
and have been recorded in one or more editions of the annual Canadian
Art Sales Index since 1980. Published in a handy, soft cover, pocket-book
format, the four volume set totals 672 pages.
