auction year was the most outstanding and successful year on record for
Canadian art, posting an amazing $32.6 million in sales! Indeed, it was
an astonishing 18% more successful than the record-setting year previous
- and this with only one million dollar painting sold. The 2002-2003 season
established a new plateau for Canadian art against which, it is felt,
future sales will be measured for many years to come. The new record high
annual turnover meant the seventh consecutive annual gain for the
Canadian art market - although surprisingly, the WPL Composite Canadian
Art Index posted its first decline in seven years.
The reason for the decline in the WPL Composite
Index becomes clear when one examines the prices throughout this year's
book - the lower and mid range of the Canadian market (that area of the
market that does not comprise the more established names that contribute
to the sixteen individual WPL Art Indices) performed extremely strongly.
So strong, in fact, that the average price for a Canadian painting sold
at auction climbed a phenomenal 35% and now sits at $6,882!
After an historic fall season in 2002 that set a
record for a single season's total, the 2003 spring season was not far
behind. Prices in general were up, and works for the more established
artists climbed significantly as buyers with a seemingly insatiable appetite,
and unlimited budget, vied for quality and rarity. The contemporary market
in particular produced some very strong results, but these, for the most
part, paled against the continuing strength of the established blue-chip
painters. However, it was the unsung heroes in the lower sectors of the
market that really stole the day.
No matter how you view it, it was an historic year
- and you will find it all in the 2004 edition of the Canadian
Art Sales Index, Canada's principal resource guide for Canadian
art prices. Now into its 24th year the Index brings you all the
prices, from $100 up, in salerooms from Saint John to Victoria, New York
